Destination wedding dreams… why saying ‘I do’ abroad could be just the ticket for you
As the UK gets colder and darker, we say hello to fluffy jumpers, unbridled amounts of hot chocolate and a reliance on Strictly Come Dancing to combat seasonal depression. But wedding planning for 2026 and beyond is also heating up. And for some nearlyweds, that means not just thinking about venues close to home, but dreaming a little farther afield to a destination wedding.
Now, I’ll be honest, my recent trip to Menorca got me thinking about this a lot. Everywhere I went, I kept picturing ceremonies unfolding, whether that was barefoot vows on the beach, a flower-filled park for a vow renewal or guests gathered around giant paella pans for a post-ceremony feast. But the truth is, Menorca is just one example of how majestic a destination wedding can be.
So, let’s talk about why a wedding abroad could be the perfect choice for you.
Why choose a destination wedding?
For many nearlyweds, a destination wedding ticks boxes that a local wedding just can’t. I’m talking guaranteed sunshine (usually), a built-in holiday for your guests, and even more of a chance to liberate yourself from the usual wedding traditions (but naturally this is always the case with a Pop-Up Celebrant ceremony).
Ceremony settings you’ll never forget
One of the best things about a destination wedding is the ceremony backdrop. It could be a beach wedding. Think golden sands, waves lapping and the sun setting on the horizon. Or a garden or park ceremony, surrounded by nature and ideal for intimate gatherings. Or a historic square or villa courtyard, full of history, character and charm.
When I was wandering around Menorca, I kept thinking, “This park would be perfect for a naming ceremony,” or “Imagine vows right here, with the sea sparkling in the background.” That’s the beauty of destination weddings. Everyday spots suddenly become extraordinary.
Adding local flavour
Part of the allure of getting hitched abroad is weaving in the culture of the place. That could mean using local flowers in your bouquet or ceremony décor (Menorca’s blooms are bold, joyful and full of colour). It could be sharing regional food with your guests – paella in Spain, mezze in Greece, pasta feasts in Italy. My stomach is already rumbling at the thought! And of course, including a nod to local traditions or music. These details will give your guests an experience they’ll remember long after the last dance!
The feel-good factor
Destination weddings aren’t always about extravagance or scenes to show off on social media either. They can be simple, heartfelt and stripped back to what matters, ie the promises you make in front of the people you love. It’s an excellent way to truly create a day that feels joyful and authentic. And if the thought of planning a wedding ceremony from afar feels overwhelming, that’s where I can help! And you’ll pleased to know my trademark energy, empathy and storytelling fits nearly into my hand luggage so I’m good to go, wherever and whenever you are.
